Science and Society Event Showcased IPFW Research during Regional Science Fair

Students and faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences joined peers from across campus to present posters and displays at Science and Society at IPFW (SASI) on March 18. The event was held in conjunction with the 62nd annual Northeast Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair (NIRSEF), at which students in grades 4–12 competed in a regional science fair. Between judging sessions, the NIRSEF students and their families were encouraged to explore research presentations from SASI presenters, including research from participating COAS faculty and students from the Departments of Anthropology, Biology, English & Linguistics, History, Psychology, and Mathematical Sciences.

SASI committee chair and Assistant Professor Punya Nachappa (biology) explained the event’s importance: “Showcasing the high-quality research taking place on campus will broaden the public’s understanding of the importance and value of scientific research at public universities like ours. We also believe that SASI will have a positive impact on recruitment and retention of high-caliber students and faculty at the university, resulting in greater community engagement and revenue growth.”

SASI presenters competed for top posters and displays, with a $100 prize incentive. Two of the four winning presentations were from Arts & Sciences:

SASI16Biology major Jinlong Han won with an interactive display, “Dynamic of Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus Replication in Vector Soybean Thrips.”

SASI21Psychology majors Elisa Hernandez, Genni Newsham, and Jedidiah Davis won for their poster presentation “The Relationship Between Personality Traits and Attitudes Towards Text Messsage Responses.”
